Tompkins Cottage Museum Thanksgiving Open House will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. as part of the Mathews Thanksgiving Farmer’s Markets on November 15 & 22. Traditional fall decorations will be featured throughout. Mathews County Historical Society ornaments The Linda Carol and New Point Comfort Lighthouse will be featured. Other MCHS ornaments, publications and lighthouse note cards will also be available for purchase.

Lecture: "Research, design and construction of the re-created 17th century ship susan constant"

Mathews Memorial Library, 251 Main Street, Mathews Captain Eric Speth of Cobbs Creek, will speak on the ‘Research, Design and Construction of the Re-created 17th-century Ship Susan Constant’ at 7 p.m. at the Mathews Memorial Library, 251 Main Street, Mathews. He is captain of the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery and Director of Maritime Operations for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. Historically accurate and fully operable re-creations, these three vessels serve as exhibits at Jamestown Settlement Museum and host maritime outreach educational programs for students and visitors. Captain Speth studied at Stony Brook University and Westlawn Institute of Maritime Technology and holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master’s license for 1600-ton Ocean, Motor and Sail. He also was Coordinator of Maritime History at Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland, where he was master of the re-created 17th-century Dove, and has served on other major historical sailing vessels. He was captain of the restored 19th-century schooner Charlotte Ann, chief carpenter on the 1877 iron barque Elissa and chief mate on the Pride of Baltimore. Mathews County Historical Society and Mathews Memorial Library are co-sponsoring Captain Speth’s presentation, which is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. |
