Donations to the General Fund provide support for the operation of the Mathews County Historical Society and allows MCHS to fulfill its mission of preservation, education, and promotion of Mathews County’s history, traditions, and heritage.
The Mathews Archives is home to more than seven thousand items, including rare documents and photographs, maps, artifacts, genealogical and architectural information pertaining to the county. These resources are made available to the public at the Mathews Memorial Library located at 251 Main Street, Mathews, Virginia. Help us preserve and provide access to these irreplaceable resources!
Donations to the New Point Comfort Lighthouse Fund have contributed to the stabilization and restoration of the lighthouse and continue to support the education and interpretation of this historic Mathews County icon.
The Mathews County Historical Society has published ten well-researched books reflecting the rich and varied history of Mathews County. This donation provides the funds to research and publish future scholarly works.
The Thomas James Store is a rare and excellent example of an early nineteenth-century rural commercial building. It dates to c. 1820 and appears to be the oldest building in the downtown commercial district. This donation provides funding for the preservation and maintenance of this registered National Historic Building.
The Mathews County Historical Society maintains the Tompkins Cottage as a museum to interpret Mathews County history. This donation provides funding for exhibits, maintenance, and preservation of this significant historic building located in the Mathews Downtown Historic District.
